In the wake of the devastating shooting in New Zealand and the countries prompt response of banning all assault rifles, now is a good time to take a step back in history and revisit an assault rifle ban which existed for an entire decade. Signed and Passed in 1994 by then President Bill Clinton, this Bill failed to bring about statistically significant results to warrant its renewal. In fact, the Columbine Shooting occurred while this ban was in affect and most researchers agree any decreases in assault rifle deaths was offset by handgun deaths, as expected.
Assault Rifles have existed for an entire century, and these mass shooting are a phenomena which characterized our the modern time and no other. What does this mean? These shooting do not reflect a gun problem, rather an issue which runs significantly deeper and reflect the state of our degrading cumulative mental health. Depression rates are on the rise, suicide rates are on the rise, single motherhood rates are on the rise, prescription medicine is on the rise...it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see why these mass shooting are occurring at the rate they are now. .
We’ve created these people through the society we’ve chosen to promote, removing guns will never be the answer to solving those problems, and if we want to examine the real issue we gotta start asking the hard questions: Why would someone want to kill innocent people? This is a mental health issue, no question about it.
