I arrived to the famous Chiang Mai and I have to say... I like it but I don’t love it. Which is exactly what I expected. It reminds me a lot of Ubud in Indonesia - same vibe, tons of good vegan food, yoga spots and tourists literally everywhere. Everything’s designed for foreigners. I think most people love these kind of places because it’s basically a Western city with an Asian twist. And it’s cheaper.
Personally, I prefer a bit more of an authentic, local vibe with culture in it. We even said we felt like home in Scandinavia when we were eating at the night market today. Don’t get me wrong, I do get it. Chiang Mai is cool and it’s easy. But it just doesn’t feel like traveling to me, it feels more like I came to backpackers paradise where foreigners from all over the world has created a little bubble. It’s a lovely bubble. But it’s just not for me.
