Three years ago, Seth took my hand in his and started up the path of our favorite mountainside meadow on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Racing the sunset, he dragged me through wildflowers. We were quiet as our feet hit the trail; him with nerves, me with sweet anticipation. As we stood under the branches of an apple tree that had been witness to our first dates, hard conversations, sweet slow dances, quiet prayers, and deep longing for this moment, he pulled me close, kissed my forehead, and dropped to one knee. And my eyes began to brim with tears.
While I am certain he said wonderful things, I remember none of them. Overwhelmed, I could only watch him through tear-blurred eyes. It’s an image I’ll never forget: kneeling in a field of wildflowers, a trembling hand holding mine, another reaching for a ring box, his beautiful blue-green eyes unwavering from my own, and the mountains spilling out behind us.
The best yes.
