8.4.19 - The ☀burns, bites, bruises and blisters couldn't suck the fun from our back pack to the base of Mt. Daniel's followed by a roadside happy hour along the Cle Elum River. We planned for a summit but made a last minute call to pitch Hotel Kelty and sit our butts down on Peggy Pond's pretty lake front to enjoy camp beers, a just barely warm enough skinny dip and overdue laughs with the best company. The mosquitoes were inevitably annoying but I still live for this time of year in the Alpine. The days are long, the mountain air is sweet and warm and the snow fed lakes are just barely warm enough for swimming. A year ago @csteeny and I back packed on the other side of this mountain to the unforgettable Jade Lake and I was sold (even through my full body mosquito net 😂). Mt Daniel's summit defaulted to the 2020 bucket list because this is one of those places that deserves to be visited again.
Some annoying mosquito facts:
*Male mosquitoes don't bite. Your blood feeds the next week's generation. * The proboscis (the thing that "bites") is comprised of SIX needles (stylets) that stick into your skin to find those vessels ✒️✒️✒️✒️✒️✒️
* Two of these needles (maxillae) work like little tiny saws ⚙️ cutting through your skin
* For every 1 mosquitoe bite to the average person, I get 10 😑 (swipe ➡️ with deet and a full body mosquito suit on part of the time) * No one realllly knows (there's no sound scientific evidence) why some of us are so prone to mosquito bites, but I have some theories 🤓 (hint: mosquito bites were never an issue for me until about 2 years ago)
