Oh hey there little sea otter! This female was spotted swimming around in the waters of Morro Bay, California. Once hunted to the brink of extinction for their fur, the species is listed as endangered, but their numbers are now recovering. The redness on the nose is due to a rather aggressive mating ritual in which the male will hold the female’s head underwater to subdue her, often resulting in some pretty serious bite injuries! In one study, 4% of female otter deaths were caused by these injuries. Sea otters aren’t always so cute and cuddly!
