Upplands runinskrift HG1989;44.
In 1980 two burial mounds in the grave field "Rickebyfältet" were excavated about half a kilometer north of Vallentuna Church in Uppland. It turned out that the mound was raised over a powerful man from the Vendel Period ("Vendeltiden", 550–793CE), the predecessor of the Viking Age. The name of the village Rickeby comes from "Rinkaby" with "Rink" meaning "warriors" so "Village of the warriors", there are about 20 places with this name in Scandinavia. An interpretation presented by place-name researchers is that they were some kind of royal garrison located at strategic places. But it may also be thought that they were farms that were used for maintenance for a special group of warriors, which is perhaps more likely given the rather loosely organized kingdoms that were in ancient Scandinavia. These burial mounds were high status and were about 10m in diameter and 1.5m high and besides the cremation burial there were finds such as bones from horses, dogs, cattle, birds of prey for hunting, gold-plated and gemstone inlaid sword hilt and horse-bridle, beakers of colored glass, decorated shield fittings and finally battle-helms like the ones found at Vasgärde.
In one of the burial mounds called "Vallentunagraven" was a small gaming dice made of deer-antler was found with a miniature runic inscription, you have to get very close to see it. It dated between 590–640CE and measures 1.3×2.5×1.5cm. It is broken so only a fragment of it survives. the inscription is done in Proto-Norse, runes that came before the Viking Age. the inscription is hard to interpret in its entirety, but some of the characters form a word: hAukR, "hök" (hawk). Perhaps the buried man carved it himself in his day, proud to know the secretive runic alphabet or maybe it is actually his own name. The name "Haukr" is known from several younger runic inscriptions. I added a photo of what the dice would have looked like originally. Some have offered that the inscription means "The Laughing Hawk is completely ready", but sounds strange.
