As I mentioned a couple days ago, I very much enjoy me some butterfly color. Here's a really pretty one that landed on a tree in front of me a couple weeks ago.
Despite its gorgeous blue and black pattern, this species is actually called the Red Cracker (Hamadryas amphinome). You might be wondering, as I did, how did this butterfly get its name / how drunk was the person who named it? Turns out this butterfly is named for the brick red color on the underside of its hindwings and called a cracker because the males produce a crackling sound on take off.
