Prospect Profile #3: JoJo Romero (LHP)
MLB.com Ranking: 7th
Phillies.GM Ranking: 10th
Coming off a lengthy break, we're back with another prospect profile. The 1st pitcher, and 3rd prospect overall to get a profile is JoJo Romero.
After bursting onto the scene in 2016, the last couple of years have been a struggle for Romero. He started this year with Triple A Lehigh Valley, but was later demoted back to Double A Reading after a horrendous start to the season. It may look bleak for Romero at the moment, but there is still time for him to turn it around. He's still only 22 years of age, and is still viewed as one of the top arms in the Phillies system.
Another dynamic that will work in Romero's favor is that he's left handed. The Phillies flat out lack left handed pitching in their organization. Because of this, he could be looked at more favorably in comparison to other prospects. He (Romero) also has a number of pitches in his arsenal, which includes a solid changeup, curve, slider, and cutter to go along with his fastball (which is clocked in the mid-low 90's).
The comp I have for Romero is the former big leaguer Joe Saunders. For one, both throw (or threw) a variety of different pitches, the best being the changeup. Neither southpaw is overpowering, but both have shown they can be effective nonetheless by mixing speeds and location. Like Saunders, I could see Romero becoming a middle of the rotation starter with some upside.
