When people say, “you can’t…”, I always smile back and think, “Thank you for saying that. Now let me show you how I f**king can.” 😊
Never make someone else’s story your story.
Arthur Schopenhauer says in the aptly titled “Book of Pessimism” that, “Every person sees the limits of their own field of vision for the limits of the world.”
In other words, because they couldn’t do something, they believe no one else can.
When I was 21 I told everyone, “I’m going to move to New York and work for MTV”. No one really believed me. My agent at the time (one of the top in Canada at the time) went so far as to say, “Darling, you can’t…” because getting an O-1 visa (an alien of extraordinary ability) at my age was unheard of. Suffice to say, I did it.
My life would have been completely different if I believed someone else’s limitations. This is one of many stories, and each time I approach it the same way…as a challenge to overcome.
The more someone tries to dim your light, use it as fuel to burn even brighter because, in reality: no one knows what is and isn’t possible for you. The only actual truth is: “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” Is there anything Wayne Gretzky can’t do?!
