@JasonHummel - Day 4: Over a high pass (7400′), we came into view of what remained of sunset, now a fading red-orange line across the horizon – and the Pacific Ocean. A skittering descent across the length of Olympus ensued. Like birds of prey, fighting wind and muffled cries too slow to keep pace, we plunged toward camp on the Blue Glacier, swooping back and forth in search of a way between rock and crevasse fields. We circled the dying seconds of an unbelievable day before being consumed by darkness and fog. #Washington #OlympicNationalPark #OutdoorResearch #skiing

Not a bad spot for a quick snack and snap. 📸 When I took this photo I remember wishing my buddy and I could stay a little longer. I wasn’t quite as ready to leave as I’d originally thought. ...but it had already been a long day of miles and smokey skies, and we weren’t staying overnight. This spot just felt so peaceful to me. And as I put my camera away, it was in that moment that I knew I’d be back. Next time with a permit to camp.

This photo is a still frame from a failed motion control time-lapse I shot on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. I began the time-lapse with the camera very low to the ground, focusing on the smaller, close-up details in the water and ended it with a much wider and higher perspective of the creek and surrounding forest. For some reason there was a glitch in the controller’s software and the timelapse only shot about 50 frames in the beginning... and a single image at the very end of the move. This was that single frame, so I decided to process it despite having an incomplete time-lapse sequence and I think it actually came out quite well. I would have loved to have seen the outcome of the time-lapse if everything HAD worked correctly, but I guess this served as a reminder to double check my equipment before using it in the field! Have a great week ahead y’all!

One of the first times I visited Olympic National Park, I had a little encounter with a mouse living in the trunk of my rental car (see my portfolio for the whole story on that one). After all these years, I still find little holes chewed through some of my shirts. I also have holes in my underwear - but that’s a separate issue.

@JasonHummel - Day 4: As we dropped below clouds, an understory of waterfalls, cliffs and couloirs tickled our fancy. Eventually, slack-jawed, we were left with no words, just mystery and illusion, hints and suggestions of what exists here. Homer once wrote, “No wind ever shakes the untroubled peace of Olympus; no rain ever falls there or snow; but the cloudless firmament stretches around it on all sides and the white glory of sunshine is diffused upon its walls.” The gateway of Olympus is said to have been guarded by the Hours, or Horea and was a great gate made entirely of clouds. Photos failed to capture what our eyes easily saw. Where cameras failed, memory never would; this is the most incredible place I’ve ever been to in the Olympics. #Washington #OlympicNationalPark #OutdoorResearch #skiing

Wow! Lake Crescent just set the bar pretty high for 2019 for the best glassy conditions of the year. Just an amazing day for our Lake Crescent and Marymere Falls tour today. Not bad for January. It sure rains a lot here in the winter 😉 #HikeOlympic

This week I’ve been going through my photos from my trip to Olympic National Park. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a beach person at all. “Emerging Alien” Ahhhhh....Happy New year to all of you guys out there! Hope your new year is off to a good start. I figured I’d post a new but not so new image, for my first post of the new year. I don’t post much green, but figured I’d switch it up and throw some green in the mix today. I shot this scene last spring, and I couldn’t help to see an alien 👽 coming out of the forest. Looks like the tree structure looks like the alien from the Aliens movie. Call me silly 🤪 Anyway, stay tuned for an bunch of new imagery. More swamp images, more aerial images, more forests 🌳, just more weird stuff 😆 For images and info, please visit my website at: davidthompsonphotography.com #pnw #pacificnorthwest #washingtonstate #olympicnationalpark #hohrainforest #rainforest #rainforestofthesea #mist #rain #alien #aliens #glow #green #greentrees #naturelovers #naturephotography #landscapephotography #mood #mystery #nikon #nikonusa #nikonofficial #nikond850 #d850 #jungle

Meet the Crafts! We are Wes & Necia Craft and when we're not photographing weddings we love to visit National Parks, camp, and hike. One of our favorite trips was to Olympic National Park. Hiking in the rainforests up there is so magical. It was reminding Necia and I of Middle Earth big time. Some of these landscape shots that we made are decorating our daughter's bedroom now. We love passing on a love of nature and adventure to our 2 daughters, Eve and Eliza. They weren't born yet when these pics were made but Eve's first camping trip to Northern Michigan was a huge success. Anyway, it's nice to meet you! What was your favorite National Park adventure?⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #chicagoweddingphotographer #napervilleweddingphotographer #chicagowedding #husbandandwifephotographyteam #olympicnationalpark #husbandwifephotographers #chicagoengagementphotographer #napervilleengagementphotographer #rememberitvividly #wescraftphotography #chicagobride #napervillebride #napervillewedding #engagedinchicago #wheatonweddingphotographer #shesaidyes #ido #canonphotographer #canonweddingphotographer #meetthecrafts #editedwithadobelightroom #hiking #camping #tent

So this was our office this past Monday. This is my favorite thing about living in the PNW. We have the best landscapes and some of the coolest properties. “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” - Teddy Roosevelt . . . As the government shutdown is now the longest in history, my heart is with our national parks, monuments, lands, and all of the furloughed park employees. Please take a moment to visit @goparks to read about ways you can help. The best help is exactly as Teddy Roosevelt said above. Do what you can, where you are. Visit state parks or city parks and treat them well. Pack out what you pack in. Help clean up trash. Be respectful of the natural resources and if you see something, say something. Educate others , with kindness, about leave no trace principles. Consider the actions you take today to be good stewards of the greatest gift we can give our future. Torrential rain and winds in the sixties closed Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park for what ended up being a few days (boo), so I headed out to La Push, because who doesn't like to watch a mega storm system roll up the coast? The wind was so insane I could barely open my car door, and each wind gust felt like a punch in the gut that lifted me off my feet. Still, watching nature wild out is always a beautiful sight. Wouldn't want to dip my toes in it though. . 📷 A7RII // Zeiss 85mm . . . . . #pnwhiking #pnwhikers #liveoutdoors #roamtheplanet #thevisualscollective #thewanderco #allaboutadventures #earthofficial #goneoutdoors #exploremore #awesomeglobe #roamtheplanet #landscape_capture #landscapephoto #landscapeporn #landscapephotographer #moodynaturelandscapes #lapush #olympicnationalpark #seastorm #storm #oceanwaves

Day 27 of the Government Shutdown. When the government shutdown (…again) I was first pissed because Trump is a fear mongering asshole who shut the government down to stoke the racist flame and keep his base happy. And selfishly… because well, changing a Day 3 tampon* in the fucking national forest with no bathroom was honestly one of the more disgusting things I’ve done (and I had an accidental unassisted home birth.) But this is getting real guys. Government agencies are not functioning at full capacity, families are going without paychecks, and our Parks are being trashed. If you can- I would encourage you to donate to the National Parks Foundation @goparks and to stay out of the parks until the shutdown is done. I’m aware the National Parks are not the highest priority when people are being forced to return to work while not being able to make their mortgage. Donating to your local food shelter, and emergency banks is a convenient way to help those impacted. And most importantly e-mail your representatives and let them know you want this shutdown to end. No matter what your political views, I think we all can agree its time to end the longest shutdown and get people back to work (and getting paid.) . . .* those with a uterus will understand. . https://donate.nationalparks.org/page/36595/donate/1 . . . #wheresmitch #governmentshutdown #shutdownstories #weareparks #parksproject #findyourpark #trumpshutdown #olympicnationalpark #nationalparks #mtrainiernationalpark #craterlakenationalpark #badlandsnationalpark #yellowstonenationalpark #homebirth #unassistedhomebirth #optoutside #nationalpark #nationalforest #bloodeverywhere #periodproblems #roamtheplanet #wildernessculture #swingleft #fucktrump #anyoneelse2020

Point of the Arches, Shi Shi Beach, Olympic National Park. After we walked 4 miles to point, we had lunch and then explored the tide pools to discover sea stars, urchins, anemones and small fish. We also found smooth rocks of many colors. To do this hike, you must get a Makah Recreation Pass from Makah reservation, as the hike begins on native land.

Olympic National Park, Shi Shi Beach and Point of Arches. This was a fairly flat 8 mile round trip hike. It was an extremely foggy day so we didn’t have much visibility, but it was gorgeous nonetheless. We packed extra layers in our bag and we were glad to have them. It was quite windy and chilly.

Here is Washington on the countdown list of states you must visit! 🇺🇸 The Evergreen State may be rainy, but do not let that damper your plans to visit. It doesn’t rain all the time and all day long (actually it never rained on our visit; travel luck!) 🇺🇸 Seattle is not the only happening place here but it is a hub for some of the most beautiful National Parks: Mt Rainier, Olympic, and North Cascades. 🇺🇸 The Pacific Northwest has such great geography- on the coast we watched eagles fly over our heads, seals and otters play in the ocean, whales migrate! In the mountains we watched marmots run wild and deer prance around. The lakes of the Cascades were emerald greeen! I mean just look at the pics 😍 🇺🇸 You will have fun in Seattle, Tacoma is great, and there cute small town too. 🇺🇸 This is why we fell in love with WA!! . . . . #wnpf #pnwwonderland #radparks #americathebeautiful #seeamerica #discoveramerica #familytraveltribe #washingtonstate #visitwashington #mtrainier #northcascadesnationalpark #olympicnationalpark #naturefreak #familiesthattravel #letsgoexplore #takethekids #visitseattle #theevergreenstate #themountainsarecalling #godscreations #nationalparkgeek #seeamericafirst #visittheusa #roadtripusa #travelamerica #traveladdiction #toddlertravel

Pebbles along the shoreline...each one has unique variations and characteristics that is a testament to their travels; the marks and indentations from being tossed about in the churning waves and hurled against the rocks. So many different paths traveled, only to end up in the same place - and that is just it - sometimes you can have so many variations of the exact same thing, right in front of you; different paths and choices that in the end, make up your journey through this thing we call LIFE. For every path you take, there is bound to be a change in the course. Sometimes the newest path will take you higher above the waves and sometimes it will drag you into the sand; and while you might find yourself hitting rock bottom, rest assured that when you reach the surface again and make your way to shore, you will be right where you belong. (Sometimes I ramble, and I love semicolons) ⚡ Canon 6D, 35mm, ISO 100, f2.8, 1/200.

“He who marvels at the beauty of the world in summer will find equal cause for wonder and admiration in winter.... In winter the stars seem to have rekindled their fires, the moon achieves a fuller triumph, and the heavens wear a look of a more exalted simplicity.” -John Burroughs ___ Two years ago, almost exactly, I spent my birthday snowshoeing in Olympic National Park. You will not find any of my footprints among these tracks, not a huge fan of heights 😂 Definitely recommend getting to the Hurricane Ridge entrance early as there is limited and highly controlled parking. I waited over an hour the day before and ultimately turned around resolved to come back the next day. Earlier this week, I had a really magical dream. I was hanging out with a group of people who were discovering that they possessed a variety of supernatural powers. As everyone was trying out their unique powers, I sensed that I had the ability to fly. I decided to give it a go and timidly tried to take flight a few times with no success. The people in the group kept encouraging me to try again. On my final attempt, just before I took off running, I paused and said to myself, “I can fly. I CAN fly.” I felt the belief in myself begin to spread throughout my body like a warm breeze. I looked up at the big blue sky and started running. With the greatest ease my entire body lifted off the ground and I soared over the landscape! ✨ Building belief in myself is a journey I have been traveling for quite some time. It hasn’t always been the easiest path - I’ve stumbled and fallen quite a lot - but it has been worth every bit of effort. ✨ What are some of the ways that you build belief in yourself? I would love to hear your wisdom! 👇👇🏻👇🏼👇🏽👇🏾👇🏿 . . #tbt #nols #nolspacificnorthwest #olympicnationalpark #dreams #believeinyourself #believeinyourdreams #buildingbelief
