IMDB rating: 6.5 / 10
My Rating: 7 / 10
I'm not usually a fan of horror comedies, but there's something about this franchise, that's just fun to watch, even if there are no scares in this film. It may be that I always enjoy timeloop films, or that everyone is so self-aware of the film that they are making, and having a great time.
I actually preferred this film to the first one. The first one may be a better, more complete film - but the second has more individual aspects that I enjoy. Firstly this film actually explains why the main character is going through a timeloop - which was just brushed aside in the first film. I appreciate that they doubled down in the sequel, attempting to add some depth to the story.
What does get lost in this film - is the mystery. While I admit, it took me longer to figure out who the murderer was in this film, than the first - it never felt as interesting or pressing to identify who was behind the mask. Because of the choice of direction of this film, and the focus being on remembering and ending the timeloop, The comedy takes centre stage and while the timeloop is the focus, the mystery is definitely a sidenote. The humour may be interesting short term but once you start to think back about the film watched, you feel something was missing.
A fun sequel and another worthy addition to the Blumhouse line. It won't be the best movie of 2019, nor the worse. It won't be the best attempt at a comedy this year, nor the worst. And it won't be the best slasher, nor the worst. It sits in the middle - an adequate, good film.
