Photo by @beverlyjoubert | At Duba Plains in the Okavango, a five-month-old lion cub claims the top of a termite mound as her own. It's the perfect position to fend off her siblings' playful attacks. She has three siblings her own age and another two eight-month-old cousins, and when they're not sleeping, lion cubs spend most of their time stalking and pouncing on each other. It is important play for a young predator who needs to hone those skills for use in survival later on in life. But she has a lot of growing to still do, as the size of her paws attest, and constant ambushes can be exhausting. The top of a termite mound can give her a small respite while she is still able to swat at any attacks from below. Photo by @beverlyjoubert | We know this lion pride well. The females currently have two eight-month-old cubs and four five-month-old cubs. But when @dereckjoubert and I found the pride early in the morning after a stormy night, they suddenly had another two tiny cubs—clearly not theirs! There were two more females (who we call the Swamp Hunters) in the near vicinity, and we presume one is the mother of these little ones, but they didn't seem to be interested, and their cubs were being bullied by the older ones, making them mewl pitifully. As the large pride had killed a lechwe in the night, we can only assume that the little cubs had been hidden nearby and had confusedly come running when the pride called their own cubs. Now they're stuck with a strange family who are not very welcoming and bullying cubs whose predatory nature can easily get out of control. It's a highly dangerous situation for them, but with their mother nearby, there could still be a chance...To see more on this story, follow @beverlyjoubert and see @dereckbeverly Twitter feed. #OkavangoLions #LittleBigCats #Lioncubs #TsaroPride

Image by @beverlyjoubert. Irresistible - a flicking, tasseled tail is not something that a playful, young cub can ignore. How long he gets to play will depend on how much patience his mother has and how deep his claws go! He is one of the youngest members of the famed Tsaro Pride and has a lot of growing to do before he can head off into the Okavango on his own. With an estimated 3000 adult male lions remaining, a lot rests on little cubs like him. Mortality in lion cubs is high and with males being kicked out of their prides when they near maturity, it is essential for them that there is space to go and continue that journey to adulthood. The problem is that protected, wild areas across Africa are becoming smaller and corridors for young, nomadic lions to venture between existing lion territories, much more difficult to navigate. But the Okavango has been granted many levels of protection and there is a great deal of work happening to secure the source in Angola. With continued conservation of wild lands, this little cub might one day be the leader of his own pride. #littlebigcats #okavangolions #tsaropride

Photo by @beverlyjoubert | It’s tough being the youngest, and when you’re a tiny cub that has somehow ended up in the wrong pride with a lot of older cubs all practicing their hunting moves on you, the stress can take its toll. Two tiny cubs must have been hidden nearby and during a stormy night, inadvertently ran to the wrong pride when the lionesses called their own cubs. The two little lost cubs have been thoroughly pummeled and bullied by the larger cubs. The lionesses step in every now and again, but they are not looking out for these lost youngsters, and while they have been holding their own, it's a dangerous situation for them. Their real mother stays nearby however, watching and waiting... #dubaplains #littlebigcats #okavangolions #lostcubs

Photo by @beverlyjoubert | A brand-new wild cub is just a jumble of legs without balance and a face that must still grow to fit its kittenish, woolly frame. What a privilege to see one so young—only a week old. This cub has a lot of growing to do and many challenges to overcome before even remotely becoming an adult. There are other predators to avoid (and quite a few herbivores as well). Disease, conflict with people, loss of habitat, a changing climate, and poaching, fueled by a fast-growing demand for lion bones, will all make life a lot harder. The good news for this little scrap is that its mother is strong and has successfully raised a number of cubs before, so the chances of survival here are a little bit more positive. Long may you live, little lion! #littlebigcats #dikdikpride #lioncub #maasaimara

Photo by @beverlyjoubert | Over grass drenched with rain from a summer storm, a young lion moves to investigate a mushroom from the ink cap family. He's suffering from a bad eye infection that his siblings also have had but from which they're slowly recovering. He approached the mushroom with purpose and then promptly ate it. It's not that unusual—many species of cats have been known to be attracted to mushrooms—and apparently it's because they're on the hunt for protein. The high glutamate levels in fungi activate cats' umami receptors, signaling that they are protein-rich and edible. Of course many fungi species are not edible, and no doubt mistakes are made by felines around the world, but this ink cap didn't seem to do him any harm. One of the #lostcubs was rescued by his mother when he was left behind by the pride. Just a few moments alone and she was there to give him milk and protection. His sister went with the pride and remains with them. She gets bullied but not as much as before and the main lioness, Fekeetsa is stepping in when the play gets too rough. She’s allowed meat but not milk, but she seems to be largely becoming accepted into the pride. Will these two siblings grow up in separate prides and what will happen if they meet again one day? #littlebigcats #okavangolions #dubaplains

Those little paws are just itching for a game. A cub this size will sleep a great deal, but when awake and under his mother’s protection, he’s going to be a handful of mischief! #littlebigcats #lions #maasaimara #thisismytrophy

This little “Firecracker” #thelostcub will someday be a strong lioness. @maryjeantully had the pleasure to spend some quality time watching her while at #DubaPlains. Against all odds she is a little determined survivor. We look forward to following @beverlyjoubert and continuing to watch her progress. She may be little and not with her Mom, but she is a fighter and can hold her own. What an amazing experience at Duba Plains. #Repost @tullyluxurytravel ( @get_repost) ・・・ This little #lostcub has survived against all odds. I’m here at #DubaPlains in Botswana where I was fascinated by her story and for the past 3 days have gotten to spend time watching her. . . Her brother and mother moved on and this other pride has taken her in. It was a tough go at first for her. The lioness who looks out for her in this other Pride is named #Fekeetsa She is older and not able to give her milk as her cubs were now older. But she is given meat from the prides hunts. She is feisty and independent and can really hold her own. She plays with the older cubs a lot but yet she is quite independent. Si la montaña no viene a mi, yo voy a la montaña. @crosstrainingrf #crosstraningrf #crosstraning #vida #aprender Reposted from @natgeo - Photo by @beverlyjoubert. A little five-month-old lion lies on the cool, shaded side of a termite mound and looks out onto the Okavango plains, where scores of red lechwe are grazing. The ears are fully alert and those pupils are enlarged: dilated with a predator’s focus. The cub is too young to be joining the lionesses’ hunts, but he has chosen to hide himself on raised ground where he can see and not be seen. This, and that little tongue licking his lips, shows that his predatory instincts have been awakened. It won’t be that long before he starts to play his part in helping to feed the pride. #littlebigcats #okavangolions

Over grass drenched with rain from a summer storm, a young lion moves to investigate a mushroom from the Ink cap family. He's suffering from a bad eye infection that he and his siblings have all had, but from which they're slowly recovering. He approached the mushroom with purpose and then promptly ate it. It's not that unusual - many species of cats have been known to be attracted to mushrooms - and apparently it's because they're on the hunt for protein. The high glutamate levels in fungi activate cats' umami receptors, signalling that they are protein-rich and edible. Of course, many fungi species are not edible and no doubt mistakes are made by felines around the world, but this ink cap didn't seem to do him any harm. Who knows, perhaps it could even help with that eye infection? #littlebigcats #Okavangolions #mushroomeatingcats post via @beverlyjoubert

Who knows, perhaps it could even help with that eye infection? #littlebigcats #Okavangolions #mushroomeatingcats

#Repost @beverlyjoubert A little roar from a determined #lostcub who has at long last found protection and comfort. The lioness, #Fekeetsa, may not be able to give her milk, but other than the fact that the lost cub is smaller than her real sibling, who is now quite far away with their mother, it seems that she may be doing ok on just meat. #littlebigcats #okavangolions
