The publication that never ceases to inspire @natgeo is putting on a #natgeo100contest to celebrate 100 million followers. Here is my second submission to the contest. —————————
Story behind the image: A few friends and I dreamed up summiting the third tallest mountain in North America, Pico de Orizaba which stands at 18,491 ft above sea level. As my first foray into high altitude mountaineering I was completely defeated by altitude sickness and a poor strategy in attempting to summit too quickly. This led to a bout of altitude sickness and a miserable night spent at 15,000 ft full of vomiting from each direction. Fortunately, the views were impeccable and the times that I felt compelled to take out my camera resulted in some of my favorite images from this desolate high-altitude volcanic landscape. Just before our summit push @joelcollinsdc and I decided to hike a nearby mountain and take in the views.
