So this gorgeous head of hair took me 7 hours (yep, you heard that right!) to completely transform. The lovely Shannon wanted a complete overhaul after growing out her deep red box dye for at least a year. She wanted to brighten her base colour to a rich, chestnutty coppery tone and to add a natural light coppery balayaged look throughout to create something a little special. Here's my process and the challenges we faced:
Step 1: The base colour - I applied @lorealpro #majirel 1/4 6 & 1/2 6.45 & 1/4 6.35 & 20vol all throughout her virgin hair, leaving out the red ends.
Step 2: Once the base colour was developed, I rinsed it out and started my foilayage. I took fine sections, making sure to cover all of her red ends to achieve maximum lift. I used @lorealpro #blondstudio multitechniques & 30vol.
Step 3: The boring bit. Development! We had to wait for about an hour for the colour to lift. Red is very difficult to remove from the hair, even if it is old colour, and especially when it's a box dye. And boy, was this red super stubborn! I wasn't able to completely remove it, and it ended up a pinky tone on the ends. I had previously done a strand test so I was prepared for this, but this was still going to be a challenge to achieve the desired tone.
Step 4: Toning! So I ended up toning her hair twice after the first formula (dialight 8.34 with a squidge of 7.40) wasnt quite enough to cover the pinky tone completely. We had originally wanted a more natural copper, but in order to cover the unwanted red, I came to the conclusion we had to go more vibrant to achieve a more desirable, even colour. The 2nd toner I used was @lorealpro #dialight 7.40 & 9vol for 15 minutes.
Step 5: Olaplex! I used @olaplex No.1 all throughout the colouring process, but after toning, my client had to sit with Olaplex No.2 for 20 minutes.
Step 6: Cut & Finish. So, after a whole 6 hours of colouring, lightening and toning you would think my client would need to cut about 10 inches off due to damage, right? Wrong! Along with my professional care and correct application, Olaplex played a huge part in keeping her hair in great condition. (Continued in comments)
