"The real risk is not a slipped grip at the edge of the peak. The real danger is just to linger at the base of the thing." -Astronautalis
I feel very lucky to have the opportunities that I do have. Leading up to this trip was a lot of contemplation about climate change and the climate crisis, and what I can do about it as a single powerless human being.
A childhood where I was able to spend a lot of time playing outside in our large yard, at the playground, and a ton of play at the climbing gym has left me with a healthy respect, fear and appreciation of our larger backyard as a whole. Being able to play outside has kept my mental health in check, led me to some amazing relationships, and kept my body healthy.
I've worked for a few companies that do an amazing job honouring the outdoors including @verticallyinclined @mec @calgaryclimbing and @helaventures. All of them have given me opportunities to learn, enjoy, and contribute back to the communities surrounding them. Being able to get outside for play and for work has been integral to how connected I feel with our earth.
As a young person trying to figure out a bit of purpose in my life I tried to ignore the climate crisis because I was too small and the problem was too big. But that can't be the way it is anymore. Heading out on trips like the ones I'm so thankful for won't be possible if glaciers don't exist, we can't find clean water, and we are dodging weather extremes.
This trip was put on by @onwardup_campus for a few Lucky MEC staff. Led by some really neat folks, and I'm so happy that I was able to go. The whole thing, for me, was underlined by a short timeline of, "if I do more of this, I must go now." But a better way to go thinking about it is to join the movement.
MEC will close it's stores on September 27 until 5pm to support its staff in attending the die-in if they wish. Getting out has made me love what we have and feel ownership for our earth. If you're not sure about this whole thing then research some science, or even better, go play outside. Love the rock we live on, then help save it. I'll be there.
