About a year and a half ago, most the plants in my garden were stunted and typically smaller than the Lamb’s Quarters in the first picture. My dirt was compacted and desiccated, much worse than what you see in the picture. And according to my neighbor it had been that way for 3 decades!
Now, a year and a half after mulching, introducing earth worms and a diverse group of plant species, my dirt has become soil that is rich with life. The Lamb’s Quarters in the second picture grew to be 2’ 2” (66cm), all without my help... I didn’t even plant them!
I believe I’ve mentioned before how prolific Lamb’s Quarters are, but along with many other plants generally considered weeds, I never fear their presence in my garden. These plants are generating biomass, effectively capturing and holding water and nutrients from the environment. I then chop these plants and they become mulch to cover the soil and food for the worms and multiplicity of other soil organisms that now generate their own soil. I just water and add new plants!
