Fifo Flashback – The #freiburgerfilmforum is travelling back in time!
Until our upcoming festival in May 2019 we will present to you impressions of earlier #festival editions - #films we screened, #filmmakers who were present, topics discussed and old #analogue #photographs .
Today we glance back to the year 1999!
In 1999, additional workshops and screenings were specifically held for children for the first time, under the title "Foreign life worlds – intercultural childhood". As a highlight, the Australian director Dennis O'Rourke presented his film works from the Pacific Islands & Southeast Asia. Besides, an homage was dedicated to the director and master of African cinema Djibril Diop Mambéty, who unfortunately deceased in 1998. Moreover, the topic of 'Life between cultures as an opportunity but also as conflict' represented a reoccurring theme: from the "Latino Cinema" concentrating on Mexican-Americans and Puerto Ricans in the US, to the coexistence of different cultural and religious backgrounds in Israel.
Apart from that, several documentaries were shown, where the personal stories from indigenous people from Brazil, whose voices had become stronger in film representation over the last decades, were told - stories about their history, work and the power of television. Last but not least, in cooperation with the Museum Natur und Mensch, the photo #exhibition of Giorgio von Arb explored the cultural complexity of a European metropole through his portraits of bridal couples from Zürich, Switzerland.
We gladly welcomed Moussa Sène Absa (Senegal, France), Sini Bar-David (Israel), Jean-Paul Colleyn (France), Paul Espinosa (USA), Moslih Kanaaneh (Norway), Paula Morgado (Brazil), Dennis O'Rourke (Australia), Jean-Marie Teno (Cameroon, France), Michael v. Wagenen (USA) many more guests to six full days of #ethnographicfilm experiences.
