Blue is the Warmest Color (2013) Abdellatif Kechiche This French love story follows a teenage school girl named Adèle (Adèle Exarchopoulos) who is just beginning to discover her sexuality, and meets an older girl with blue hair, Emma, (Léa Seydoux) at a same sex bar. Adèle is a gifted literature student, loves to learn English so that she can watch Scorsese and Kubrick without the subtitles, aspires to be a teacher and is still a little naive and unsure of herself. After trying sex with a boy from her school, she feels nothing but empty. Emma is a talented art student, worldly and enigmatic. From something as simple as learning to appreciate oysters, to (obviously) having sex with another woman, she opens up an entire new world for Adèle. What follows is the most brutal and unflinching look at the exhilarating highs of falling in love, and the excruciating pain of it ending (indeed, Emma’s blue hair seems to fade at the exact same rate as their relationship deteriorates). Rivalling the likes of Tokyo Story (1953) and Hidden (2005, also French) for the most realistic film I’ve seen, not once does Blue is the Warmest Color make us feel like we’re watching a movie. Nothing is rushed, conversations are natural, and scenes go on for as long as they have to. Music is sparse, but is stunningly effective when used (that scene in the backyard played to ‘I Follow Rivers’ by Lykke Li...so good). Hundreds of hours of footage were shot, sadly we are left with only three. I could watch this for days. You’ll hear that the director Abdellatif Kechiche was a nightmare to work with, true or not, whatever he did worked. Whilst he gets the best out of both leads, it is Adèle who gives the greater performance. A scene in which she is confronted after being caught cheating is actually damn painful to watch. A gorgeous piece of cinema. 5/5

So after watching my freshly released copy of Ridley Scott’s sci-fi-horror classic Alien, I thought I’d post this Alien themed snapshot of my new ongoing series I’ll cleverly call “Original or sequel?” I know, it’s amazing, that’s why I get paid the big bucks. Personally, it would take a borderline miracle for anyone to make a compelling case for Alien: Covenant as the superior film, but I will admit it has grown on me slightly over subsequent viewings. The original is one of my all time favorite films, and it was really tough to divorce myself from the fact that this is a very different Ridley Scott than 40 years ago. That said, as a sort of Alien film connected to Prometheus (incredible film), it was okay. What about all of you??? ARE YOU A FAN OF THE ALIEN FRANCHISE??? WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ENTRY? Let me know below! #bluraycollection #bluraycollector #movie #moviecollection #moviecollector #collection #film #cinema #cinephile #bluray #hd #highdefinition #marcsmovievault #geek #moviebuff #moviereview #movieroom #horror #scifi #classic #alien #ridleyscott #70s #nowplaying #4k #ultrahd

I have never ever had a cinematic experience like this before in my life. This movie is not just epic, it is BEYOND EPIC with so many surprises and instant classic scenes. It managed to give an extremely satisfying conclusion to the journeys of the OG 6 Avengers. If this movie sucks, it would hurt all the 21 films before it. Thankfully, it is awesome. What Endgame did now was enhance all the 21 films before it in the MCU. This movie is really made for the fans. What I can say is this, the bigger a fan you are of MCU films, the more invested you are in all of them, the bigger the payoff you will get. For a massive fan like myself, I can’t help but feel immensely emotional after watching Endgame. I cheered, I laughed, I am in awe of it and teared up many times during my 2 viewings of the movie. That 3rd act was pure JOY on a epic level. The movie even surpassed my super high expectations. There are some details regarding the time travel which I wasn't so sure about during my 1st viewing, however upon 2nd viewing and closer "inspection", everything is cool. This movie is really a MIRACLE. Kudos to the Russo brothers. It is so damn hard to pull off something like this and they stick the landing so beautifully. It is a classic that will be talked about many many years to come. It is a culture event that is probably once in a lifetime. I guess we have to wait for a long time to witness something like this again. Endgame is an incredible DRAMA film, it's not just a superhero action movie. I love the slower 1st and 2nd acts as much as that final 3rd act. To sum it up, the more invested you are in these characters and these films in the MCU, the more you will love Endgame. PS: I was extremely lucky and grateful to be able to get tickets for the opening day and the day after. With the crazy demand for Endgame tickets, I initially thought I won't be able to experience it on the opening day. Thankfully, the site crashed after we managed to book the tickets. I've been following the MCU since the beginning in 2008 and I will never forget the this finale cinematic experience that close off a glorious chapter.

It’s hard to know where to start on a film as elegant, sophisticated, and bewilderingly incredible as this - particularly given the fact that these are traits not normally associated with the MCU franchise. Truthfully, End Game was really good - End Games was monolithic. With ever attempt to avoid spoilers, let me just say that simply that this film finally breaks down the walls, defies the tropes, and ignores the formulas associated with the previous MCU films, and what the audience is left with is a true cinematic masterpiece. Do yourself a favour and see this film! In case I’m not being clear, this is a clear 5/5 star review! . . Congratulations to all involved, a spectacular way to end this 22 film epic saga! . . “Nobody is perfect. We are all just one step up from the beasts and one step down from the angels“ Half Broke Horses "... the most important thing in life is to learn how to be unsuccessful.” Overcoming difficulties, story of perseverance, unconditional love and untapped family ties despite everything ... A biography of Jeanette's tough story. Sometimes it coincides and even though the ship is curved, the voyage is right. In fact, the story of our hero is no different. The life of a woman, who has grown up with parents who do not comply with the rules of society and therefore has to mature at an early age with her other siblings ... Instead of giving up, giving up or rebelling, it is very enjoyable to get to know and not to meet by art, these brave people who are focused on success. In addition, by“Half Broke Horse” said in biographical novel that she carries her grand mother's genes and in this way she is so powerful ... Jeanette Walls is a successful journalist who keeps a very important secret. With a background that she keeps secret about her family, Walls grows up in a violent family with her siblings. Her father, an extremely charismatic man, is also an alcoholic, and when he gets alcohol, he becomes unpredictable, dangerous. Her mother was a free-spirited man who refused to take responsibility for her four children. . CROWS ZERO (2007) & CROWS ZERO II (2009): . "There's nothing wrong with being a Crow. When you compare them to the poor caged birds that have forgotten to fly, Crows are much better. Being a Crow is good enough for me." . As an edgy teenager, I loved the Crows Zero fims directed by Takashi Miike. So I gave them a rewatch recently, just to see how they hold up for an adult viewer. The films are based on the delinquent manga by Hiroshi Takahashi with screenplay by Shōgo Mutō and are kind of loose prequels to the source material, although some liberties have been taken in case of some of the characters. The 2007 film starts with Genji Takiya (played by Shun Oguri) transferring to Suzuran High School in the final year. Known as the "School of Crows" because of the dark uniforms and delinquent nature of its students, Genji aims to be the top dog of Suzuran by defeating everyone. This is the story of him recruiting allies to fight Tamao Serizawa (played by Takayuki Yamada), another third year student, and his friends and followers. There's a subplot of Ken Katagiri (played by Kyôsuke Yabe), a Suzuran dropout who befriends Genji and relives his school days through him. The 2009 sequel is about Suzuran's rivalry with Housen Academy which took a dark turn two years before the events of the film when Suzuran's leader Kawaishi Noburo stabbed and killed Bitou Makio, his Housen counterpart. There's been a non-aggression pact between the two schools since then, which Genji unwittingly breaks. There's also a subplot of Kawaishi getting released from juvenile centre and caught in the downward spiral of violence which engulfed him two years before. Besides the impressive action sequences and upbeat music, the films deal with themes of growing up, adapting to the real world and looking back at one's past through rose-tinted glasses. The humour in the films seems juvenile but as someone acquainted with shōnen manga and anime, I gave it a pass. However, the handling of the female characters was problematic in both the films. With over a hundred directions to his credit, Takashi Miike is an icon of Japanese cinema. I highly recommend watching his 2010 remake of 13 ASSASSINS.

Twin Peaks, “Pilot” (1990) | Dir: David Lynch | DoP: Ronald Victor Garcia | . . . . Y’know, I’ve watched Twin Peaks. Many times. In college, it seemed like everyone was raving about it. But I never actually paid much attention... Probably because I always watched it in a stoned stupor in the middle of the night when nothing much registered except for the magnificent theme, which would then lull me into that deep, tempting, couch-sleep. Last week though, I actually watched it. Like, really watched it. Some of it was familiar, yeah, but it was also wholly new to me. And Jesus Christ, it was great. I’m so glad I revisited it. It’s patient, it’s odd, it’s intriguing, weird, creepy, dreamy, and, damn, does it love Snoqualmie establishing shots. I ended up devouring the first season in a couple of days and now I just want to go visit my friends in Washington. Anyways, these stills are from the pilot and I dig ‘em. #cinephile #film #cinema #tv #90s #twinpeaks #davidlynch #moviestills #filmstills

Moving account of a major 20th century atrocity - Funan (2018, dir. Dennis Do, 84 mins) How does one depict a genocide such as that inflicted by the Khmer Rouge on the Cambodian people? Some — such as Rithy Pahn, who used clay figures rather than actors for the reenactments in his Oscar-nominated documentary “The Missing Piece” — would argue that to do so is to empower the perpetrators, to exploit the victims, and potentially to reduce the atrocities to a form of spectacle. And yet, the world must not be allowed to forget. By embracing hand-drawn animation as a tool for tactful re-creation, “Funan” director Denis Do provides audiences a unique window into this relatively under-represented 20th-century horror, one that serves as an act of witnessing even as it avoids directly showing the violence on-screen. - Peter Debruge, Variety. #takingyoufurtherintofilm #cantabfilmsoc #funan #dennisdo #cambodia #war #meditation #antiwar #khmerrouge #animation #genocide #horrorsofwar #annecy #filmfestival #filmawards #christchurch #otautahi #film #filmsociety #newzealand #cinema #filmlover #cinephile #culturevulture #filmmaking

Dragged Across Concrete (dir S. Craig Zahler) 2019. I was really excited going into DAC, as although I hadn’t seen Zahler’s two previous films, the plot sounded really cool, and the cast was intriguing to say the least. Zahler uses his run time to maximum effect, as the film takes a novelistic approach to its plot. It’s very slow burning, and the camera sometimes just stays still, as if you’re sitting in on a scene with characters at times. It tells 3 parts of a story separately, and slowly begins to tie them together in the third act, and it’s done to really good effect. A lot was written about the casting here beforehand. Having Mel Gibson play a cop with right wing tendancies was always going to turn a few heads. Him and Vince Vaughn share a really good chemistry, and scenes of those two on stakeouts are a highlight, and add to the meticulous way the story is told. On the other side of the plot, Tory Kittles does fantastic work here. Playing an ex con attempting to pay his way to support his close family, he has a wily and intelligent nature to him. As much I really enjoy DAC, and its previously mentioned novelistic nature, that could also be it’s drawback at times. Certain lines would be great if written in prose, but said out loud didn’t always work, and sounded a little offputting. If you love your crime films told with purpose, a slow burning nature, and with depth, I’d really recommend Dragged Across Concrete. #draggedacrossconcrete #scraigzahler #melgibson #vincevaughn #torykittles #film #cinema #cinephile
