Built on a rock in an idyllic loch side setting on the Isle of Skye, Dunvegan is the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland and has been the ancestral home of the Chiefs of Clan MacLeod for 800 years. ▫️ On display within Dunvegan are many fine oil paintings and clan treasures, the most famous of which is the Fairy Flag. Legend has it that this sacred banner has miraculous powers and when unfurled in battle, the Clan MacLeod would invariably defeat their enemies. ▫️ Another of the castle's great treasures is the Dunvegan Cup, a unique 'mazer' dating back to the Middle Ages. It was gifted by the O'Neils of Ulster as a token of thanks to one of our most celebrated Chiefs, Sir Rory Mor, for his support of their cause against the marauding forces of Queen Elizabeth I of England in 1595. ▫️ There is also a small collection of Bonnie Prince Charlie related items on display including: one of the Prince’s waistcoats, a Jacobite amen glass, and a lock of the Prince’s hair. ▫️ Image by @sibotk ——————————————————— #scottish #lovescotland #scotland #historicscotland #isleofskye #visitscotland #love_scotland #travelinggram #mytinyatlas #thisisscotland #scotspirit #folkscenery #modernoutdoors #master_shots #scotland_insta #ig_worldclub #igersscotland #goexplore #castle #discoverglobe #discoverearth #roamtheplanet #history #castlesofscotland #scotlandsbeauty #passionpassport #discoverscotland #greatnorthcollective #dronestagram

Thanks to: @englishhighlander Castle Tioram meaning "dry castle" is a ruined castle that sits on the tidal island Eilean Tioram in Loch Moidart, Lochaber, Highland, Scotland. It is located west of Acharacle, approximately 80 km (50 mi) from Fort William. Though hidden from the sea, the castle controls access to Loch Shiel. It is also known to the locals as "Dorlin Castle". The castle is a scheduled monument. Castle Tioram may date to the thirteenth- or fourteenth century. It appears to have originally been a principal stronghold of Clann Ruaidhrí. Eilean Tioram, the island the fortress sits upon, is first recorded in a charter of Cairistíona Nic Ruaidhrí, daughter of Ailéan mac Ruaidhrí. According to early modern tradition, preserved by the seventeenth-century Sleat History, the castle was erected by Ailéan's granddaughter, Áine Nic Ruaidhrí. The castle certainly served as the seat of the latter's Clann Raghnaill descendants for centuries. As such, Castle Tioram is the traditional seat of the Clanranald (Clann Raghnaill) branch of Clan Donald. The castle was seized by Government forces in around 1692 when the clan chief Allan MacDonald of Clanranald joined the Jacobite Court in France, despite having sworn allegiance to the British Crown. A small garrison was stationed in the castle until the Jacobite rising of 1715 when Allan recaptured and torched it, purportedly to keep it out of the hands of Hanoverian forces. It has been unoccupied since that time, although there are some accounts suggesting it was partially inhabited thereafter including for the storage of firearms from the De Tuillay in the 1745 Jacobite Uprising and Lady Grange's account of her kidnapping. Kilchurn Castle is a ruined structure on a rocky peninsula at the northeastern end of Loch Awe, in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. It was first constructed in the mid-15th century as the base of the Campbells of Glenorchy, who extended both the castle and their territory in the area over the next 150 years. After the Campbells became Earls of Breadalbane and moved to Taymouth Castle, Kilchurn fell out of use and was in ruins by 1770. It is now in the care of Historic Environment Scotland and is open to the public in summer. Thanks @harry.t.baker

This is Carbisdale Castle in Sutherland (Scottish mainland) The castle was built between 1905 - 1917 for the Duchess of Sutherland. She had married George Sutherland Leveson Gower - 3rd Duke of Sutherland in 1889. This marriage was despised by the Sutherland family and when the Duke died in 1892, his will was contested by his son and heir. After a lengthy court battle she was found to be guilty of destroying documents and imprisoned in London for six weeks. The Sutherland Family came to an agreement giving her a large financial settlement and building her a house if it is out with the Sutherland' s lands. It is often belived that the Duchess purposely made sure the castle has clocks on three of its four faces - the side facing Sutherland is blank, supposedly because the Duchess did not wish to give the time of day to her former relatives. The castle was later bought in 1933 by colonel Theodore Salvesen, a wealthy Scottish businessman from Norweigan descent. He provided the castle as a safe refuge for King Haakon VII of Norway and Crown Prince Olav, who would later become King Olav V, during the Nazi occupation of Norway in World War II After the war he donated the castle to the Scottish youth hostel association (SYHA) Following frost damage, the hostel closed for repairs in February 2011. Further structural damage was discovered, and over £2 million has been spent on repairs. Towards the end of 2014, Carbisdale Castle was advertised for sale by the SYHA, and 17 marble sculptures and 36 19th Century paintings were put up for sale at a London auction in May 2015, raising £1million for the SYHA. A sale to FCFM Group Ltd was completed in September 2016 and is now being renovated into a luxury hotel The Castle is also belived to be haunted👻 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Information - Wikipedia - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbisdale_Castle #castle #castlesofscotland #carbisdale #scotland #sutherland #nazis #norway #occupation #sutherland #hotel #syha #hostel #ww2

Blue hour at the superlative thirteenth century Eilean Donan Castle near the village of Dornie in the western Highlands of Scotland. Built on a small tidal island where three sea lochs - Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh - meet, it was the former stronghold of the Clan Mackenzie and was restored in the early twentieth century. It featured in the Hollywood blockbuster, Highlander (1986). Craigievar Castle, near Alford, Aberdeenshire The great seven-storey castle was built in the 16th century. It’s know as the Pink Castle and was perhaps the inspiration for Walt Disney's castle. After over 350 years the castle was given to the National Trust for Scotland by William Forbes-Sempill, 19th Lord Sempill in 1963. #fortheloveofscotland #nationaltrustforscotland #craigievarcastle #castles_oftheworld #fiftyshades_of_history #explorescotland #loves_scotland #scotland #scotlandlover #scotland_greatshots #monumental_world #visitscotland #insta_scotland #igscotland #ig_Scotland #icu_scotland #instascotland #loves_united_castle #scotland_insta #traveling_scotland #traveling_uk #scotlandexplore #thisisscotland #wonderlustscotland #photosofbritain #hiddenscotland #castlesofscotland #unlimitedscotland #earthpix #tlpicks

The Billiards Room is one of the most popular rooms in the castle. During WW1 convalescing soldiers often played a game of billiards and would stub the end of their cigarettes out on the edges of the table. ⭐ Broughty Castle is a historic castle on the banks of the river Tay in Scotland. It was completed around 1495, although the site was earlier fortified in 1454 when George Douglas, 4th Earl of Angus received permission to build on the site. His son Archibald Douglas, 5th Earl of Angus was coerced into ceding the castle to the crown. The main tower house forming the centre of the castle with four floors was built by Andrew, 2nd Lord Gray who was granted the castle in 1490. The castle saw military action during the 16th-century War of the Rough Wooing. ⭐ 📸 Photo credits: @evoneo32i 🤗 🔸️ 🔸️ ⏩ Tag us or use #EuropeCastles for a chance to be featured! ⏪ 🔸️ 🔸️ #castlesofinstagram #castlesoftheworld #castleview #historicbuildings #medievalcastle  #medievalworld #middleages #castlesofscotland #broughtyferry #broughty #broughtyferrycastle #scotlandtrip #scottishcastle #scottishhistory #scottishcollective #scottishheritage #scottishfold #scotland #scotlandbeauty #scotlandsites #scotland_ig #scotlandlove #scotlandgram #scotlandexplore #scotlandshots #scotlandinsta #historicscotland #scotlandphotography

Haig, a native from Edinburgh certainly deserves such a memorial, as he was very influential in the Allied military strategy during World War I (1914-1918). Even those unfamiliar with the war will at least have heard of the Somme (1916), an Allied assault conceived and commanded by Haig. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #edinburghcastle #castle #scotlandcastles #castlesofscotland #scotland #uk #travelscotland #travelgirl #traveltrotter #travelblogger #wintertravel #winterlandscapes #edinburgh #igersscotland #igersburgos #igerszgz #reisen #traveling #monumentalworld #highlands #nature #landscapelovers #wanderlust #monuments
