In a tiny cupboard,
Among dusty boxes,
Of unlabeled things,
Lies a bag of photographs,
The non pixel kind, mind you.
The bag is stashed carefully,
The old ones.
Which is to say that,
People don’t read anymore.
The photographs span different eras through time.
I begin separating them,
Polaroids, black and whites,
I make stacks of frozen moments.
The oldest one was of the 1960s,
The time my grandparents got married,
Or as they tell every child, “Woh bhi Kya din the.” .
Maa walks in the room,
Nostalgia pours over her face,
The good kind,
The where-did-time-go kind,
The bittersweet kind.
_ “I haven’t seen in 20 years.” she says,
As she walks over to grab one,
From her wedding day in '95,
Looks at it as if she doesn’t recognize the people in it,
Throws it on the ground, “We’re going to be late. Clean this up and let’s go.” .
Maa wipes up the nostalgia,
Like it’s the dirt on the temple floor,
No one has to know.
There are pictures,
Of papa with friends,
He doesn’t talk to anymore,
Maa with her college friends,
But doesn’t remember their names anymore.
Nani and Nana stand in a house,
In a village that doesn’t exist anymore.
Photographs become the victims of time,
Taunt you about the things that don’t exist anymore.
I don’t clean up the floor,
A ground filled with segments of time,
Like ashes in a river.
It took me a long time,
To unearth these,
They don’t belong in bags,
Bags of neglect.
I’m not ready for these,
Pieces of memories,
To get lost among the lives,
That don’t care about the past.
I’m not ready for them,
To get covered,
In the ashes of skeletons,
In the unheard closets of time.
