👆🏼👆🏼PIRIFORMIS STRETCH. The piriformis muscle is often associated with people complaining of tight hips and the general discomfort to squat. This discomfort regularly leaves gym goers with an unanswered question on why.. 🤔🤷🏼‍♂️ “My hips just hurt when I squat. They always have”. . 💡This stretch allows internal rotation of the femur in the hip capsule, encouraging a steady extension of the piriformis. You will feel a stretching sensation deep in your glute 🍑. Make sure to place a mid weight dumbbell gently below your knee to stop your leg from rising restricting the stretch (I used 16kg). Keep your back straight and chest tall. Hold for approximately 90 seconds each side. Once finished jump up, try a body weight squat and feel the freedom!!! 🏋🏼‍♂️ #rogersresults @castlehillfitness_

W-SITTING... Why not? . Possible problems: . Tight hamstrings, increased internal rotation at the hips resulting in pigeon toed walking/running, no midline crossing or hand dominance, difficulty with core strength & balance, even hand writing & reading and other activities of daily living. . What do OTs encourage? . Sitting with legs to the side, straight out in front, crossed in front or on all fours for activities. . If you have concerns about your child's development, a paediatric OT may be able to provide advice.

P R E -  S U R G E R Y  R E H A B 👨🏻‍⚕️🔪 . I haven’t been posting as much informative videos on Instagram lately like I use to due to a nagging L5-S1 disc herniation I suffered 4 months ago. I’ve had 2 epidural injections done within the past 4 months, I’ve been going to physical therapy 3 days a week ever since the pain has reduced from acute to mild just to try to regain any strength that’s left, despite the severity of the injury. In two weeks I will have a microdiscectomy procedure done to the injured disc in my low back to remove any inflammation thats pressing on the nerve. . Look, I’m not here to vent or give you a sorrow story on how I have been facing adversity. I’m posting one last time before the year ends to inform you on how ACTIVE RECOVERY is better than PASSIVE RECOVERY when it comes to overcoming any type of injury. . Passive recovery is anything from laying in bed, icing an injury, rubbing bengay/tiger balm/icy hot; pretty much anything that’s like putting a band-aid on what initially hurt you. Don’t get me wrong if the pain is acute; meaning you can’t withstand it. By all means take all the rest and medication you need to reduce it down to at least tolerable pain. . Active recovery is the complete opposite, hence the word active. For a example instead of laying in bed, go for a walk or a short hike, get a professional massage or roll yourself out with a foam roller. If the pain is tolerable or you have no pain at all, try physical therapy and be proactive about your injury with exercises that help your injury, not anything that makes it worse. . My spine specialist suggests I do as much rehab as I can prior to the surgery so that the recovery post-operation will be faster rather than relying on just the surgery alone. Just because I’m getting surgery doesn't mean this will heal it right away. There is still lots of work to be done post-op, but will do my best to stay ahead of the game NOW to make the recovery that much quicker. . Here are some of the active recovery rehab exercises I’ve been doing to maintain a solid foundation beneath me and around my low-back to hold me up following my surgery of 6 straight weeks of passive recovery...

4th person (so far and who has needed it) I've tested my theory on (2 leg press, one barbell deadlift, 1 barbell squat) that moved WAY differently (better) AND had more glute/hip activation with a simple switcheroo. Mobility, activations and recovery homework are super important and can save a ton of time for actual training. I'm not discounting that at all and these are all important variables. What I'm saying is, as a trainer, help move them along faster (or move yourself along faster) in a safe way by cueing accordingly with a more narrow stance and slight internal rotation at the hip joint. Visualize trying to draw a triangle when you shoot your hips back. On a real-life-scale, most people who sit all day at work do not need to be positioned in the 'typical stance' and sure don't have the time or commitment level to do their homework 😁 Remember, this may or may not apply but that's up to you to decide. This week’s #mobilitymonday shows you the Brettzel Stretch. This stretch combines a few different aspects and will work on thoracic rotation, TFL, IT Band, Hamstring, Quad and Hip flexor Mobility. Start on your back and bring one leg over to the other side. Then reach under to your other leg and pull it up from the foot like you’d do a traditional quad stretch. As a follow-up to my previous post, here are a couple of things you can do if you have a 1:1 ratio of active to passive ROM, but don't quite have the 35 degrees of internal rotation. ⚪ 1. 90/90 PAILs & RAILs: I've covered these extensively in previous posts so I won't go into detail here*, but I did want to briefly address the set-up that I am using. I prefer this to the 90/90 position on the floor, which for me is very uncomfortable due to my shitty left hip- as a result, it makes it difficult for me to focus on the right hip. Another option is to do it standing with your target leg elevated on something like a massage table. As a reminder, you are isometrically externally rotating your hip for the PAIL and internally rotating for the RAIL. ⚪ 2. The second video shows how to actively train the range that is available to you, using the valslides. This is also a good way to teach yourself how to control rotation at different angles- I have my leg out to the side but you could also do it with your leg out in front, or anywhere in between the two positions. By learning how to control pure rotation of the hips at various angles and positions, you will be able to get much more out of your PAILs & RAILs. * *Let me know if you would like details on how to perform the 90/90 PAILs/RAILs, I can tag you in my other videos or answer any questions that you may have. I will follow up tomorrow with videos on expanding your AROM to achieve that 1:1 ratio.
