✨Magical Mada’in Saleh✨
A place you could visit again and again and never get bored. I first visited the site in 2008 with a group of Finnish friends and things were quite different back then! We had to have a compulsory police escort at all times all the way from Madinah airport where we drove from. Our tour guide was an Indian guy and we saw only two other tourists that weekend in entire al Ula. Most of the sites were not monitored or protected in any way. Fast forward to al Ula in 2018: direct flight from Riyadh to al Ula, friendly, knowledgeable Saudi tour guides (male and female) stationed at all the sites, some sites are closed for archeological surveys and well protected. Hotel camps are providing comfortable accommodation and services. On top of all this there are well organized desert excursions, farm visits, a festival area in old Al Ula town and a mind blowing concert hall built in the middle of the desert. All this development is thanks to the hard work of Royal Commission of al Ula to develop al Ula into a world class tourism destination by 2030. And from what I saw and experienced this weekend at the Winter at Tantora Festival, this goal is attainable and al Ula as a destination has the potential to become the top tourism destination in the region. Wadi Rum + Petra will not be able to compete with all this area has to offer, so amazing it is. Those who follow my Instagram stories will already have an idea, but stay tuned for more posts about al Ula and the festival.
